Different Types of Gum Surgery

•Pocket Reduction (also known as Gingival Flap Surgery)

This procedure is recommended when periodontal disease has caused deep pockets that don’t respond to scaling ad root planning. In this procedure, your surgeon folds back the gums and removes bacteria and infected tissue before the gums are secured back in place using sutures.

•Regeneration

Bone regeneration procedures are indicated for situations where periodontal disease has led to bony defects that are amenable to regeneration. In this procedure, the surgeon flosses back the gums and removes disease-causing bacteria before inserting bone grafts, membranes, or tissue-stimulating proteins to facilitate bone regeneration and gums to fit snugly around the teeth again.

•Crown Lengthening

This procedure is recommended when the tooth height is inadequate for a crown. The surgeon reshapes the gums and bone around the concerned tooth to create more crown height. The gums are sutured to allow uneventful healing. Sometimes, crown lengthening is carried out to create symmetrical gum proportions for a beautiful smile during a smile makeover procedure.

•Soft Tissue Graft

In cases of gum recession around teeth or gum deficiency around implants, a soft tissue graft is recommended. The surgeon typically harvests a small piece of gum tissue from the roof of the mouth and grafts it at the deficient site.

→ Soft tissue Grafts for Teeth Recession:  In case of recession, teeth can become sensitive due to root exposure and it may also pose some  esthetic challenges. Soft tissue grafts cover the area of gum recession and it prevents and further recession if the site was left untreated.

→ Soft Tissue Grafts for Implants: When an implant site has soft tissue deficiency, it needs improvement with soft tissue grafting. This may be done before implant placement, at the time of the placement, or at a later stage depending on the case demands.

Our surgeon will discuss your needs and provide you with all the options to make the right choice as it pertains to your clinical needs.
